    Dowel Driving Machines

    Dowel Pins and Insertion

Dowel pins also termed as parallel pins, are solid metal cylindrical fasteners usually precision ground to close tolerance diameter (to permit accurate fitting) that are used for a wide range of industrial applications and it is found in many of the products which we use in our day to day life like chairs, toys, doors etc. They are used to firmly retain parts in a fixed position, maintain alignment between different parts and also to join different components together.Dowel pins are normally made of stainless steel, alloy steel or hardened steel. Dowel driving machines, popularly known as dowel driving machines as the name suggests are used primarily to locate dowel pins into the dowel holes at specified angles and depth which can be controlled with the help of CNC (Computer numerical Control). Dowel driving machines are primarily used in wood working industries especially in the production of doors and windows.

Dowel pins are held in place by interference created around the entire pin circumference when it is pressed into a hole by a dowel driving machine. However, some applications for solid pins require clearance or transition fits on at least one of the components to be fastened. When a dowel is interference fitted into a blind hole, it increases the pressure of the air trapped in the hole. Therefore it is strongly advised to specify that the dowel should have an air release flat ground along its full length to prevent the dowel being ejected under the pressure of compressed air, or bursting the component into which it is driven. The dowel joint assembly is just like a regular screw joint except that dowel pins are used instead of screws.

    Working of Dowel Inserters

Hole piercing or drilling and positioning of dowels is extremely important for accurate insertion of dowels. Location, angle, depth and the material of construction are the factors to be considered. Dowel driving process may either include drilling of holes or a standalone dowel driving mechanism. The dowel driving machine may be as simple as dowel insertion guns or highly complex machines capable of inserting several dowel pins simultaneously. A small amount of glue into each hole in one board and the dowels are inserted into the glued holes. There should be specific control on the amount of glue applied as too much of glue will either squeeze out or make it difficult to insert the dowels. Any squeezed out glue should be immediately cleaned up. The refilling of the dowels takes place in a chute batch by batch. For precise adherence of the drilling gap to the leading edge of the work piece, a work piece stopper powered by a linear motor is used. As soon as the operator presses a switch or peddle, the machine will drive the dowel pins into the respective holes. As accurate positioning of the dowels is highly important prior to insertion, the measurement system required for positioning is directly integrated into the motor and high precision measurement systems are usually used. The drilling units if already integrated in the machine are positioned and synchronized also with the same drive.

A dowel driving machine is arranged in such a way that a single head is provided with a single shaft hole and multiple receiving holes, for independently receiving different kinds of dowels, arranged side by side in parallel. The selection is made out of the different kinds of dowel pins with different diameters and lengths supplied from chutes to the respective receiving holes. As a result, different kinds of dowels can be driven easily without much of setup time spent in changing the machine arrangement hence making the machine more suitable for integration into a continuous production line and mass production system. The dowel driving machine consists of a common base or bench and the part where the dowel should be pinned is held firmly with the help of multiple arms. Pinning of the dowels is sensor controlled for position and depth. Most of the semi-automatic dowel driving machines is pneumatic controlled.

    Advanced Dowel Driving Machines

The dowel insertion machines range from manually driven dowel insertion gun to medium sized dowel insertion jig. Also fully automated machines are also available in the market. A highly sophisticated dowel driving machine has a cycle lead time of merely five seconds for drilling, gluing and inserting pins into the holes. It is a closed loop system with a self-diagnostic programmer to control all the machine function. In advanced machines, there are multiple spindles for the drilling and inserting operation thereby multiple jobs could be carried out at the same time and the holes of varied dimensions could be also controlled based on the range of operability. Most of the semi-automatic machines are pneumatic controlled. Some of the advantages of fully automated dowel driving machines are: continuous supply of dowel pins with constant feed rate, high precision with adjustable working length and width, less labour intensive and low time consumption.
