Grinding is a material removal process in which abrasive particles are contained in a bonded grinding wheel that operates at very high surface speeds. Abrasive operations are performed to achieve a surface finish, which cannot be achieved by conventional machining processes. Through the cylindrical grinding process, and by using a cylindrical grinding machine, the external or internal cylindrical surface of a work piece are ground. In external cylindrical grinding machine, the work piece rotates and reciprocates along its axis, although for large and long work parts the grinding wheel reciprocates. In internal cylindrical grinding machine, a small wheel grinds the inside diameter of the part. The work piece is held in a rotating chuck in the headstock and the wheel rotates at very high rotational speed. In this cylindrical grinding operation, the work piece rotates and the grinding wheel reciprocates.

Classification of Cylindrical Grinders

There are three different types of cylindrical grinder as follows:

• Plain centre type cylindrical grinder - The machine is similar to a centre lathe in many respects. The work piece is held between head stock and tailstock centres. A disc type grinding wheel performs the grinding action with its peripheral surface.

• Universal cylindrical surface grinder - Universal cylindrical grinder is similar to a plain cylindrical one except that it is more versatile. In addition to small worktable swivel, this cylindrical grinder machine provides large swivel of head stock, wheel head slide and wheel head mount on the wheel head slide which allows grinding of any taper on the work piece.
• Centerless cylindrical surface grinder – In a centertless cylindrical grinding machine, the work piece is not held between centres but by a work support blade. It is rotated by means of a regulating wheel and ground by the grinding wheel.

Applications of Cylindrical Grinding Machines

Apart from external or internal surface finishing, cylindrical grinders for sale, including CNC cylindrical grinder and hydraulic cylindrical grinding machine, are also used for some special purpose applications. A specially formed single ribbed wheel or a multi ribbed wheel with matching thread profiles can be used for thread grinding. Roll grinding is a specific case of cylindrical grinding wherein large work pieces such as shafts, spindles and rolls are ground. Crankshaft or crank pin grinders also resemble cylindrical grinder but are engaged to grind crank pins which are eccentric from the centre line of the shaft. Cam and camshaft grinders are essentially subsets of cylindrical grinding machine dedicated to finish various profiles on disc cams and cam shafts.
